You might already be saying to yourself, “Stress relief- is this another self-help post? Or, is she going to tell me to make a plan, ask for help, count to 10, pray, go to church, go to a spa, or have a glass of wine to de-stress?” Nope, I am NOT! Ha!
I will say that stress (both positive and negative) can cause so many other problems. Maybe it’s a new job or preparing to get married or issues with your child or not knowing
which way to proceed in a relationship or even dealing with health issues. Whatever it might be – we’ve all been there. Sleepless nights. Talking to people to get their opinion or becoming a hermit. Worry during the day. Over or under eating. Over or under working…the list goes on an on. No matter what the pressure is it does force out the best or worst in us. That fight or flight response will kick in and show what we are really made of. My current stressor is determining the best fit for my next professional move along with day-to-day stuff and some days that is ALL I can think about and it can be consuming, so I have to remind myself to take my own advice.
Full days and being busy is such a natural part of my life that sometimes
I forget to enjoy the ‘moment’ in the non-stressful times. Rushing to work, church, home or to pick Tre up. Sending an email at a red light. Forgetting to go to the bathroom. Filling my desk with post-it notes so that I don’t forget something. Forgetting to eat. Writing an email while talking on the phone and redirecting a kid all at the same time (I use to work in a school). Sometimes it’s just too much.
So what does Zumba have to do with any of this? About 3 years ago I was on a brief [and stressful] hiatus from work and for some reason I kept reading about Zumba. Ads popped up on different websites all over the place…maybe it was a sign. I exercised and enjoyed group fitness classes more than working out alone so I immediately thought, “Humph, I can dance, but I don’t know about all of that….what is it all about anyway?” After some quick research I found @Bmorefit Studio located not far from where I live and after a Monday evening class I was hooked!
Don’t stop reading now- I’m not trying to sell you on going to a Zumba class…but if you do go and you get hooked, thank me later! The hype, the fun, the music, and the workout is real. In between Yolanda leading us through each songs, we all high five each other for making it through and sometimes for how low we took that squat or the extra twist we put
on that Afro-Latin move. Whatever it is it has me thinking I’m Kelly (aka Special K aka Lucinda Dickey) in Breakin’ minus the leotard, Ozone, Turbo plus all kinds of hot Latin, Carribean and African dance moves. LOL…go ahead, I am!
So why do I go? It’s a productive way to handle for me to manage my stress instead of going to my favorite French bakery and/or having a glass of wine. It helps. I can get so caught up in the dance moves that I forget what was irritating me and the fact that my kid is sitting in the lounge area of the gym chillin’ with a snack and the iPad and I go into straight competitive dance mode. Confession: I am not a competitive person by nature EXCEPT for when it comes to exercise! The person next to me has no idea I’m trying to outdo them on the elliptical or treadmill or machine or during Zumba. It’s all in good fun and earns me extra calories burned and more endorphins to help me face the next stressor.
Let’s be honest- life is cyclical and your current stressors will not be permanent, but be prepared for new stressors to take their place. Whatever you choose to do to relieve your stress I encourage you to be productive and healthy with it. Think about doing something that will be beneficial for you in the long run. I am still learning how to not ‘eat and drink my feelings’ and the days I come home with a good sweat from poppin’ and kicking and jumping around on the dance floor are the days I’m most proud of myself. Cheers to productive and healthy ways to manage your stress with a little Zumba on the side! 🙂 –krystal
